From the NZ Herald - POMPEY, Tokoroa Te Waru Hikaka.  Passed away peacefully, on the 9th February 2017.  Loved so much by his daughters Peka, Wira and Jean, all of his mokopuna and whanau.  Dear companion of Polly.  He will be greatly missed.  His legacy as an entertainer, orator, chief of Waikato, Kaumatua of Mangatangi and loving koro will always be cherished.

TRIBUTES

So sorry to hear of Tokoroa’s passing… my sincere condolences to the family.  Love - Suzanne Lynch
Very sad news to hear of this great musician's passing.  I got to know him when I was in Sydney playing guitar for The ''NZ Impacts ShowBand''.  Sammy as I knew him often visited my digs in Kings Cross.  He was a "Sparkling" kind of person and always happy.  He will be sadly missed.  R.I.P. Sammy. - Errol Timbers
Toko was one of the few surviving members of the Maori Showbands, the High Fives and the Maori Volcanics. In the early sixties he was featured on shows such as C’Mon and Lets Go as a singer under the Show name of Sammy Dee.  He was a singer, great sax player, comedian and all round entertainer.  Those who attended Eldred Stebbings and Ben Tawhiti’s funerals would attest to his skill in keeping the proceedings entertaining.  Toko was a respected Kaumatua of the Mangatangi Marae, which is on the way to Kaiaua. - Buddy Wilson
